영어로 읽는 『이 세상에 태어나길 참 잘했다』가 나오게 되었습니다. 어머니께서 이 책을 쓰신 지는 5년이 넘었고 출간 당시에도 읽어 보았지만, 이번에 다시 보면서 저는 새삼 놀라움을 금할 수 없었습니다.
어머니는 손주들이 태어날 때마다 동화를 써 주셨는데 그것은 아이들이 성장한 후에도 할머니에게 특별한 사랑을 받았다는 징표와 같았습니다. 아직도 이 동화가 감동을 주는 것은 단지 제 핏줄에 대한 사랑에 그치지 않고 모든 아이들, 나아가서는 세상의 모든 생명들을 마음에 품고자 하는 사랑으로 쓴 것이기 때문입니다. (…중략…)

My name is Kim Bokdong. The first day at school my teacher called me “Bokdeng-i,” instead of “Bokdong” during a roll call. She smiled, and the other children laughed. When I shouted out, “Present!” some of the children peered around eagerly to look at me. I didn’t think my name was funny and I wasn’t ashamed of it, but sometimes I think it’s a little sad. All of this happened after I found out why Dad gave me this name. No one told me the story of how I was named, but I found out on my own by listening to conversations between my grandmother and aunt.
