개가 사람을 문다는 것도 거짓말이야. 사람들이 너무 억압적인 방법으로 훈련해서 그렇게 되는 거야. 개들은 절대로 자발적으로는 사람을 무는 법이 없어. 그렇게 훈련을 받았기 때문에 무는 거야. 개새끼니, 개 같은 놈이니, 개만도 못한 놈이니 하는 말은 사실은 욕이 아니야. 정말 사람이 개만 못하니까. 개는 남을 죽이지 않아. 훔치지도 않아. 자살도 하지 않아. 배신하지 않아. 개는 그냥…… 그냥 착하고 즐거워. 하루 종일. 평생 동안. 그냥 착하고 즐겁게 놀고 사는 거야.」규식은 그 얘기가 나올까 봐 조마조마한 마음으로 영배의 이야기를 듣고 있었습니다. 그러나, 아직은 그때가 아니었습니다.
