“무기를 반납하면서 우리에게 유리한 고지를 따내면 되지 않습니까.”
온건파.
온건파들이 말하는 유리한 고지란 구속된 모든 사람을 석방할 것이며, 보상 계획 수립과 치료 대책 완비, 비무장 민간인의 시외 통행, 사실 보도에 노력할 것, 폭도나 불순분자라는 용어 사용 중지, 사태 수습 후 보복 금지 약속 등등이었다. 이러한 수습안은 강경파들에게 더 심한 반발을 일으켰다. 한 노동자는 주먹을 쥐어 보이면서 목청을 높였다.
“그건 원점으로 되돌아가자는 것이오. 이미 전쟁은 벌어졌고 그것도 적들이 먼저 벌인 것인데 왜 우리가 타협을 해야 합니까? 우린 절대로 항복 안 해요.”
“그게 어째 항복입니까? 최후의 타협이지.”
“It would work if we gave up our weapons in exchange for something to our advantage, wouldn’t it?” said a moderate.
Then the moderates explained that by “something to our advantage” they meant releasing the arrested, establishing plans for the treatment of the wounded and reparations for the dead and wounded, allowing unarmed civilians to pass in and out of the city, making an effort for truthful reporting, stopping using terms like “mobs” and “rebellious elements,” and promising not to retaliate after the situation is settled. Hardliners became even more upset at this proposal. A laborer made a fist and shouted, “That’s going back to the starting point. The war has already broken out, and at the enemy’s initiative for that matter, so why should we compromise? We’ll never capitulate.”
“Why is it capitulation? It’s the final compromise,” said a moderate.
