About the Author

“그래요. 나는 가끔씩 묘지로 산책을 나가요. 왼쪽으로 방향을 틀면 거기서부터 당장 무덤이니까요. 묘비들에 적힌 비명들을 읽으며 걸어다니다 보면 마치 공원에 모인 사람들 사이를 헤쳐나가는 듯한 기분이 들어요. 살아 움직이는 사람들이 제각각인 것처럼 죽은 사람이 누워 있는 무덤들도 제각각이에요. 어떤 비석에는 이름만 덩그렇게 쓰여 있는가 하면, 깨알같이 작은 글씨가 틈이 없을 정도로 꽉 들어차 있는 것도 있어요. 그런 사람은 무슨 할 말이 그렇게 많은 걸까요? 나는 그걸 다 읽어요. 거기 묻힌 사람들이 나에게 말을 거는 것 같아서 그냥 지나칠 수가 없어요. 죽은 사람들이 내는 소리가 어찌나 시끄러운지 어떨 땐 귀를 막기도 하지요.”

“Yeah, sometimes I go for walks in the cemetery,” she admitted. “It’s just around to the left side from here. When I walk around and read the epitaphs written on the gravestones, it almost feels like I’m walking through a crowd of people gathered in a park. Just like living people you see walking around are all unique, the graves of the dead are all unique, too. Some gravestones are engraved with nothing but a large, imposing name, and others are covered with lines and lines of text written in cramped, tiny letters. And I wonder to myself: What could those people have to say that they had to write so much? And so I just have to stop and take a look. Sometimes the sound of the dead talking is so deafening I have to cover my ears.”
