혜자의 발끝에서 피어나고 있는 노란색 꽃술의 눈꽃이 마지막 꽃잎을 채웠을 때였다. 나는 혜자의 그런 모습을 예사스럽게 보아 넘기다 말고 문득 모가지께에다 차디찬 소름을 얹었다. “……무슨 꽃이지?” “몰라요!” 나는 혜자의 작은 고무신이 찍어대는, 그 애의 작은 고무신 코에서부터 펴나고 있는 이름 모를 꽃잎들을 보면서부터 한 가지 섬뜩한 기억을 떠올리고 있던 것이었다. 그 기억이 미처 여물기도 전에 혜자가 낮게 말했던 것이다.“할머니가 그러는데요…… 우리 엄마요. 지금 막 죽었대요!”“……?” 나는 혜자의 어깻죽지를 와락 싸안았다. 그리고 눈발 속으로 먼 혜자네 집을 허망하게 바라다볼 뿐이었다.

Hye-ja finished the last of the snow-flower petals that bloomed at the tip of her foot, a flower that had yellow pistils in its center. I looked down at Hye-ja casually, and suddenly I felt goosebumps across my neck.“What kind of flowers are these?” I asked. “I don’t know.”I suddenly remembered something chilling as I watched Hye-ja scurry around and as that nameless flower bloomed from the tip of her tiny rubber shoes. Even before this memory could fully take shape, though, Hye-ja said in a low voice, “Grandma said... my mom, you know, she just died!”I said nothing. Then, I reached down and hugged Hye-ja abruptly. I stared blankly in the direction of Hye-ja’s shack through the shroud of descending snow.
