현관의 벽시계는 자정을 넘어 있었다. 국문학부 1학년이라는 정훈에게 빌린 전화카드를 밀어넣었다. 사방 벽에 투쟁구호를 적은 대자보들이 역사의 기왓장처럼 나붙어 있었다. 지역번호를 포함한 열 개의 숫자를 눌렀다. 신호가 가자 기다리기라도 했었다는 듯이 기숙사의 민희는 즉각 받았다.
“……나머지는 내일 얘기해줄게. 이거 빌린 거라 빨리 끊어야 돼.”
“아으, 이 바보. 내가 너 때문에 미쳐. 성격 다 버려.”
“미안해.”
“첫차 타고 내려와. 알았지?”
“알았어.”
“대식당 문 앞에서 기다릴게.”
“그래. 내일 보자.”
그러나 서로 못 끊고 뜸을 들였다. 민희가 비명 지르듯 말을 더했다.
“무현아, 배고파서 어떡한다니.”
“참을 만해.”
“그러길래 데모는 왜 해. 나랑 놀지.”
“그만 끊을께. 잘 자.”

The clock on the wall of the entrance said it was past midnight. I inserted the phone card that I’d borrowed from Jeong-hun, a freshman in the Korean literature department. The posters and slogans were plastered on the walls like roof tiles, the expanse of pictures slowly spanning a whole history.
I dialed 10 numbers including the regional code. Min-hui answered right away, as if she’d been guarding her phone.
“...I’ll tell you the rest tomorrow. I gotta go now. I borrowed this card,” I told her. “God, you’re such an idiot! Driving me out of mind. You’re ruining my life you know!”
“I’m sorry,” I said.
“Take the first bus in the morning, okay?”
“I will.”
“I’ll be waiting for you by the cafeteria door.”
“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
We went back and forth, waiting for the other to hang up first, until Min-hui practically yelled into my ear, “Moo-hyun, you’ve eaten, right?”
“I can take it.”
“Why’d you join the demonstration in the first place? You should have stayed with me.”
“I gotta go. Good night.”
