나는 Q의 중국집 자리에 만두가게를 차리자고 했다. 메뉴는 만두와 쫄면. Q는 만두를 만들고 W는 쫄면을 만들면 될 것 같았다. 주문받고 음식 나르는 일은 나하고 이 녀석하고 둘이 하면 되지 않겠어? 나는 고등학생의 머리통을 살짝 건드리면서 말했다. 그러자 고등학생이 나도 끼워줘서 고마워요, 하고는 훌쩍거렸다. 이거 매워서 우는 거예요. 오해하지 마세요. 그렇게 말하고는 입 속의 면을 씹지도 않고 삼켰다. 나는 여행사를 다니며 번 돈을 내놓았고, W는 찜질방에서 아르바이트를 해서 번 돈을 내놓았다. 벽을 새로 칠하고 바닥에는 미끄러지지 않는 타일을 깔았다. 금고 바닥에서 유효기간이 지난 복권을 주웠다. 넷은 머리를 맞대고 복권을 긁었다. 먼저 당첨금을 확인했다. 십만 원. 당첨 숫자는 5였다. W가 천천히 동전을 움직였다. 5라는 숫자가 서서히 윤곽을 드러냈다. 에이 아쉽다. 날짜만 안 지났어도. 고등학생이 연신 아쉽다는 말을 했다. Q는 복권을 카운터 벽에 붙여놓았다. 이게 우리에게 행운을 가져다줄 거야.

I suggested we open a dumpling shop at the place once known as Q’s Chinese restaurant. The menu would be mandu dumplings and jjolmyeon spicy noodles. Q would make the dumplings and W would make the noodles. “This girl and I can take the orders and serve the food,” I said, tapping her lightly on the head. The high school girl said, “Thank you for counting me in,” and started sobbing. “I’m crying because this is too hot. Don’t take me wrong.” She gulped down the noodles without chewing. I chipped in with the money I’d earned working at the travel agency, and W contributed her income from working part time at the bathhouse. We painted the walls and laid non-slip tiles on the floor. We found an expired lottery ticket at the bottom of the safe. The four of us gathered around and began to scratch it. First, we verified how much the prize money was. One hundred thousand won. The winning number was 5. W moved the coin slowly over the surface. The number 5 slowly revealed itself. “What a pity! If only it hadn’t expired,” the girl said over and over again. Q stuck the lottery ticket on the wall next to the cash register. “This will bring us good luck,” he said.
