「별건 아닙니다. 그 여자가 어떤 증세로 들어왔는지 그냥 좀 궁금해서요. 방에서 도통 나오지를 않으니까요. 혹시 자폐증은 아닌가요?」
나는 마치 그녀가 방에서 나오지 않기에 궁금증이 일었다는 것처럼 돌려 말했다. 그러기 위해서 자폐증이라는 증세까지 동원하고 있는 내가 우스꽝스러웠다. 의사는 환자인 주제에 남의 증세를 제법 용어까지 구사하며 이러쿵저러쿵하는 게 가소로운 모양이었다.
「자폐증이 아니라 일종의 과대망상증이지요. 멀쩡하다가도 한 가지…… 비행기를 몰고 북한을 갔었다는 거예요.」
「예? 비행기요? 북한을요? 자기가 말입니까?」
「그렇죠. 고위층을 만나러 갔다고요.」
“I don’t mean to pry. I’m just a little bit curious to know why she’s here. She never comes out of her room. Is she perhaps autistic?”
I pretended that I was curious because she wouldn’t leave her room. It was so ridiculous of me even to bring up the subject of autism. The doctor seemed to smirk, a mere patient discussing another patient’s symptoms, even using medical jargon.
“She’s not autistic, she’s a megalomaniac. She seems okay, but then?she’ll suddenly surprise you by insisting that she’s flown an airplane to North Korea.”
“Airplane? North Korea? By herself?”
“Yes, she says she went there to meet high-ranking officials,” the doctor said.
